A neighbourly dispute is never a nice experience. It can make you feel uncomfortable and anxious, which is not something you want to be feeling regarding your nearby residents. If you are finding yourself in an unsolvable predicament, here are some simple steps to take to move forward.
Talk It Out
Speaking to your neighbour is a good way to kickstart things in a civil manner. Take a note of the time and date that you spoke to them. Simply describe the problem and outline what action you would like your neighbour to take.
If you feel as though speaking to them is not the best course of action, you could write them a letter instead and give this to them. Be sure to keep a copy of anything you say or post.
Contact Your Neighbours Landlord
If the problem persists, you can complain to their landlord to put an end to the issue. Land registries can help you to find the information you are looking for.
Use A Mediation Service
If things don't seem to be getting better, and the conflict you have tried to address is worsening, you could use a mediation service. This involves a third party helping you and your neighbour to come to an agreement or concussion regarding the issue.
Complain To The Council
You can turn to your local council for help if your neighbours are continuing to cause disruptions. Things like noise, dust, smoke, fumes or a build up of rubbish are all valid reasons to complain to your local council. They will typically investigate the problem.
Call The Police
If your next-door neighbours behaviour becomes violent or threatening in any way, it might be a wise idea to call the police. Or, if they are breaking the law in any way, you can contact the authorities to deal with their behaviour.
Take Court Action
If nothing else works, and the issues you raised to your neighbour are not being resolved, taking court action is the last thing you should try. Using legal advice or Citizens Advice may help you win your case.
